Status: Fixed Location: Boyer Ave. E. @ 24th Ave E Description: Westbound on Boyer Ave E, upon reaching 24th Ave. E, a bicyclist often wants to turn left in order to reach the Interlaken Blvd bike route. Recommendation: Increase sensitivity of the detector and mark the location for a bicycle Comments: Log: ******************[18 Dec 2007 0:52:53 EST] Report edited/modified by: Rebecca Slivka [1], geocoded******************[18 Dec 2007 1:54:51 EST] Report edited/modified by: Rebecca Slivka [1] ********************************************************************************** 18 Dec 2007 2:25:35 EST, Rebecca Slivka [1] comments: [ sent email to Megan Hoyt (Seattle DOT) 17 dec 2007 ] ********** ********************************************************************************** 22 Jan 2008 12:48:04 EST, Rebecca Slivka [1] comments: [ rec'd response from SDOT 17 Jan 2008: We have received your recommendation to increase the sensitivity of the detector and to mark the location for a bicycle at the intersection of Boyer Ave E and 24th Ave E. We have let the signal operations group at SDOT know about your recommendation. The signal operations group will evaluate your recommendation. Douglas Cox SDOT Pedestrian & Bicycle Program ] ********** ********************************************************************************** 22 Jan 2008 12:58:31 EST, Rebecca Slivka [1] comments: [ sent reply back to SDOT (Doug Cox) 22 Jan 2008: What do you mean when you say "The signal operations group will evaluate your recommendation."? Does it mean they'll try to fix the problem, or just decide whether it's worth even looking at? The signal detector currently DOES NOT WORK for bicycles. This is a big problem. As the Hazard Reporter notes, a bicyclist at this intersection must get off his bike and walk over to the sidewalk to reach a pedestrian button to try and get the signal to change. Because that is so annoying and tedious, some bicyclists may resort to running the red light. Traffic control devices should work for all vehicles (including bicycles). ] ********** ********************************************************************************** 16 Feb 2008 17:54:17 EST, Rebecca Slivka [1] comments: [ 16 feb 2008 Jim Clark reports: at 24 Ave E and Boyer Ave E (Bicycle Watchdog report #109), I see that SDOT has placed a "T" marking on the pavement to mark the spot for a bicycle to trigger the signal. I have not yet verified that stopping there actually causes the signal to change, because every time I have ridden that way recently, there has also been a car present that overrides any need for the bicyclist to trip the switch. Keep up the good work!
